storyrainthejournal: (contemplative)
Here is my ArmadilloCon schedule:

Saturday the 11th, 11:30 AM - Reading (I'll probably read from the new novel...or maybe a story coming out soon)
Saturday the 11th, 2:00 PM-3:00 PM - Hollywood and Sci-Fi: The "Romance" Continues
Orive*, Barrett, Smith, Spencer, Wheeler, Reisman
Saturday 4:00 PM-5:00 PM - What should you have read this year?
Klaw*, Siros, Crider, Lansdale, Mills, Reisman
Back to daily life and job as usual now that [profile] planetalyxis safely home and my vacation days are behind me. It was awfully swell to have the presence of a beloved friend in the loft, and to do those sorts of things I don’t do on my own in my home town. A fantastic two weeks, all considered. Thank you, Alyx.
Now, I have the workshop stories to read and crit, a story to write, the novel to re-submerge in, birthdays and baby shower presents to see to, and, of course, a great towering bunch of jobwork editing to do.
And here’s an interesting quote from Edith Wharton (1862-1937):
“How much longer are we going to think it necessary to be ‘American’ before (or in contradistinction to) being cultivated, being enlightened, being humane, and having the same intellectual discipline as other civilized countries?”
Apparently a fairly long while.

In a pretty brief trip, Alyx and I managed to get in a lot of beach and ocean time and all that time in the waves or watching and listening to the waves and the wind with my feet in the sand left me feeling very mellow and scoured clean inside. Something about the ocean, it's just good that way. I finally made friends with the Gulf this trip, enjoyed the extra salty, warm water, sandbar wave action, and body surfing joy. (In past trips, the Gulf always seemed very second rate compared to the East and West coast oceans.)

Not as many bird ops as at better times of the year, but there were birds, and Alyx got some good shots. I got some nice ocean shots, and will eventually post some.

In the downtime moments we're skooling along through Veronica Mars S1 (for me) and Criminal Minds S1 (for Alyx). Which makes us both very happy.

This morning I'll return the car before work, work tomorrow, too, then three days off for more vacationing. Have a bit of e-mail, post responding, and, oh, hey, writing, to catch up on in the work breaks today and tomorrow...and probably some during the vacation days, too.

And an agent asked for a partial, so off that goes.

Every once in a while a post on my friends' page will muck up lj on the work computer, and the page just won't load past that one post. It will work fine on the home set up, but completely balk at that one post here at work. Not consistently for any one person or kind of post.

This is my last day at work this week. (squee!) Picked N&C&co. up at the airport last night at 11, after happily sucking down some tube with Alyx and having a little nap. No wheels now, but tomorrow we pick up the rental car. Tomorrow night we have tix for Mr. Potter at the Alamo, dinnertime showing. Eat, drink, and watch magic. Friday it's off to Port Aransas for some beach and birds and other wildlife.

In other news, loving having Alyx here.

I'm at work the first three days of this week, and having a heck of a time with my shoulder, arm, and hand (um, that means pain), but just knowing I've got a friend that I'll see when I get home is awesome.

After our walk by the river on Saturday, I knocked on the door of a house we passed with a closed up truck in the drive, and a worried looking little chihuahua tied in the back of it (it was really hot out) and managed to communicate my worry for the dog in Spanish (which consisted of 'perro caliente') to the old man who came to the door through a sea of children. He thanked me very sincerely and got the dog out. I'm kind of proud of myself for not just assuming the dog would be okay (tiny dog, really hot out, no windows cracked on vehicle, no water) and pushing myself to knock on a stranger's door, silly as that may be.

I'm wishing we had more downtime before heading to Port Aransas this weekend, but it will rock in any case.

I have an Alyx!

Last night [profile] planetalyx and alternated watching Doctor Who with watching lightning as a storm rolled slowly in; then we goggled at some of the most amazing light effects I've ever seen as the setting sun shone eerily under the heavy storm clouds, casting gold green light and shadows, with the rain still falling...I can't describe it adequately and it was the sort of thing you'd need a serious camera and a skilled photographer to capture on film.

We also had a mini writing date down in the cafe over lunch yesterday, then I went for a massage while Alyx taught online, napped, and had a humming bird visit.

Currently it is raining some more, the cats are dissatisfied with their breakfast, the finches have just about decimated the firecracker blossoms, and Alyx is showering. I was thinking Barton Springs today, but given the weather a rethink may be in order.
