Songs I am currently enjoying a lot:

Andrew Bird, Tenuousness

The Civil Wars, Twenty Years - The Civil Wars held a contest for filmmakers to create the official video for the song, "20 Years" from their debut album, Barton Hollow. This video, from South African production company, Innerview Productions, was the winner. (this video makes me cry everytime I watch it)

Of Monsters and Men, Your Bones

The current writing playlist is long and shifts a lot, and also includes a lot of soundtrack music, but these are on it. So here's a snipped from the current writing, a short story called "The Demon of Russett Street," which I'm revising:

A smoky steam lifted off the creature’s rough fur and leathery hide as it hulked in the middle of Sirin’s room, tusks and eyes catching the light. It sat back on the elephant hind legs. The carpeted floor creaked under the beast’s weight. Its long tail curled around, the end caught in clever, black-fingered hands playing with the tail’s fur tuft. Its tusks were nicked and scarred. It’s eyes glowed black, like coals rotten with ember.

Love this stop-motion animation (also like the Shins song with it): The Rifle's Spiral. The artist also did the end credits of the Lemony Snickets movie, (with which I was obsessed for a while, as I think they are a thing of absolute brilliance and beauty). I want the magician and the rabbit for my birthday, please.

What Martha says here is true, women seem to get erased from history all the time--we also get erased, elided, and omitted from current reckonings of various achievement pretty regularly, too.

Favorite song off my summer playlist. There a couple other videos that show the band, but this one, which is just a still image throughout, is the best audio version I could find on YouTube.

Fireflies - Mother Falcon

Just what was advertised:

Down By the Water - The Decemberists
Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) -  Arcade Fire
Seven Day Mile - The Frames
Andalucia - Yo La Tengo
Do You Love Me - Guster
Just Say Yes - Now Snow Patrol
Dead American Writers - Tired Pony
Isengard Unleashed - London Philharmonic Orchestra
Waiting On the World to Change - John Mayer
This Is Why We Fight - The Decemberists
Lovesong [Extended] - The Cure
Here Comes the Sun - The Beatles
Soul to Squeeze - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Say Hey (I Love You) - Michael Franti & Spearhead
Lullaby [Extended] - The Cure
The Summer - Yo La Tengo
The Riders Of Rohan - London Philharmonic Orchestra
Shut Your Eyes - Snow Patrol

Yes, pop, alternative, rock, and soundtrack. The extended writing mix has a lot more soundtrack, which I think is par for a lot of writers.

Listening to my fall/winter '09 cobble of music I currently love, I just realized there's a thread running through some of the songs of being haunted--or being the ghost yourself.

I am officially on vacation. Though today is pretty much a regular Saturday in the life of me. Off to Saturday breakfast soon; then a phone date with one of my cousins; then an exciting afternoon of chores. Exciting I said! Chores I said! Sometime in the next day or so (depending on how long she stays with other folks) my friend Eliz will be here staying with me.

No particular vacation plans other than relax. Write, take some long walks, see some movies, eat good good, have some naps. All things I really enjoy. Hurrah.

One of my favorite R.E.M. songs (the vid segues into another song, which is why it's so long, but this was the best performance of it I found).

Take comfort in your friends.

(Contrary to what this might seem to indicate, I'm feeling just fine--I just love this song.)

And, in case it's of any interest, my winter '08 playlist...

under the cut )

One of the few xmas songs I really like (and don't just barely tolerate), I give you The Pretenders "2000 Miles."

For all my loved ones and everyone snowed in, or far away.

Mushrooms and global warming

The President and the Planet

Quichua chocolate, a way of life

Two songs heard on KVRX this morning, both of which I really liked, Jonathan Richman's "Man Walks Among Us" and Thanksgiving's "Responsibility." The show was The Heliocentric Hootenanny.  ( [ profile] mkhobson , I think you'd appreciate at least the description of this show--it makes me think of you and your writing)

Last night I ordered delivery from Mama Fu's; a little expensive (not the food, the delivery), but really good, and plenty of leftovers for lunch today. Sweet. Good Chinese delivery is a checkmark of civilization, in my book.

"List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your LJ along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they're listening to."

I'm not tagging anyone, but please take a tag if you're up for it.

1 Feeling Good - Nina Simone
2 There Is an End - The Greenhornes & Holly Golightly
3 Red Dust - Calexico/Iron & Wine
4 Ask DNA - Raju Ramayya
