all night (or the parts of it I woke up for, though by the mud it could have been the better portion thereof). With some thunder and lightning thrown in. Sooooo lovely to listen to in bed with Sula.
What I love about rain: beyond the sound, which is really many sounds and can be both soothing and invigorating at once, comforting (if you're inside) and exhilirating if it's popping on your umbrella; if you're umbrella-less all you hear is yourself either laughiing or cursing, depending on temperment, and the thunder or hiss of the wet stuff. But, beyond this...rain adds dimension to the world. Little beads of light on windows, leaves, grass; sheen and reflection on streets, making art out of any cityscape. Trees seem to lift to it, or bow to its power when it pours. Possibility, promise, mystery and motion in the sky...
I have a sun umbrella now, a big silver thing that's supposed to cut the temp by 10-15 degrees under it. Doesn't seem to do that, but it's awesome having portable shade for the (many) shadeless and therefore brutal bus stops at which I while away half hours at a time. (Usually I read, but I haven't quite figured out how to do that with the umbrella in one hand--it's a big honking thing.)
Helped get the kids off to the park this morning; Massimo took a lot of convincing. Allegra said, very sweetly and quietly, 'but I want to go to the park' (and who can blame her? they've been stuck in the house for the last few days) at which Mass went into tantrum mode, I have allergies, I can't go outside, blah blah blah but very loud. Teo joined with Massimo until I suggested they take their bikes and ride at the park. Then it was two to one and finally M said he wanted to go too, though he grumbled about how his bike was now too small. So the bikes had to be dried off and somewhat de-mudded. Which I did while E got the kids loaded and off they went. C had gone back to bed. N comes home today, which is good, because C has reached the point where he doesn't put food away, leaves stuff open on the counter, and is very grumpy with the kids (things are not going well with his project deadline). However, things are not good with N's mom, so I don't know what state of mind she's going to be in. I cleaned the bathroom yesterday and want to try and clean the kitchen before she gets home today.
Then I want to go to a movie, dammit. And on other subjects of greater interest--Farscape rocked this past Friday. I love what they're doing. ˇ
