So I figured out late yesterday afternoon that the Cowboy Bebop movie, which was made after the series finished it's run and came out last year in Japan, was playing as part of the Austin Film Festival, currently in progress. Playing last night, at the Paramount. Yipsters, thinks I. The Paramount is a huge, beautiful old theater (with state of the art equipment and a giant screen), which meant that even after all the fest badge and pass holders were in, there'd be plenty of space for one-shot ticket buyers.
I called Chad to see if he wanted to go, and he couldn't (band practice), but he dropped by Pam's badge on his way to practice. Now the AFF is billed as the "writer's film festival" with lots of panels and workshops, competition for screenplays, etc. Any writer who can afford a badge to attend all this stuff, however, is clearly working at an unfair advantage, economically speaking. Pam, however, as a staff writer at Texas Monthly, gets one for free. And where had Pam been since the fest started last Friday? In New York. So I got to go to the movie for free (it rocked) and see it with actual other Bebop fans, of whom I know none, and I still have Pam's badge and the fest runs through Friday.
