I decided to go back to my former practice of writing the first draft of a work longhand on this new story; I always do a lot of note writing and individual scene drafting longhand, but had gotten into the practice of doing a lot of writing directly into the computer in the last ten years.

At my Clarion, I remember Joan Vinge showing us one of her original longhand manuscripts, and how like my own it was, close, scribbley writing and bits trailing off into the margins, up, down, all around. Impossible for anyone but the writer herself to decipher.

Feels good, the longhanding, and this story is moving along--though that may be as much because of the story matter as anything else. Fun stuff.

The AWP (Associated Writers and Writing Programs conference) is in Austin this year, right now in fact. Not only will I get to see my cousin Nancy in the next few days, but this panel looks good and I think I'll be going to it:

Omnidawn Publishing's Ken Keegan and Rusty Morrison present
ParaSpheres and moderate a panel of writers including: Kelly Link;
Gavin Grant ; Brian Evenson; Jeff VanderMeer; & Matt Cheney FLASH:
