cat question for the hive mind
Oct. 16th, 2009 09:07 amSo, Sula's behavior has been increasingly bizarre the last month or so. I thought it was a side effect of the steroid she's on building up in her system, but the vet doesn't think that's it, as the steroid is one that's not well absorbed, which is why she prescribed it for Sula's intestinal difficulties.
I'm taking her to the vet this afternoon to see if we can discover some other reason for her behavior, but I thought I'd ask the lj group mind, too.
behavior of the little brown cat:
- she hides in various places most of the time (closet, currently)
- when she comes out, usually just for meals, she runs as if the floor were made of lava; in fact, the floor appears to always be made of lava and Sula's objective to get up off it as fast as possible, onto the counter, the windowsill, the couch... (we have no fleas, none)
- she'll sometimes still come up on the loft bed in the morning, but then when I go down and get their food ready, she just stands up there on the bed railing, frozen like a squirrel, for a long time before finally moving again and coming down for food; she does this frozen in place thing on the counter, too, and bleats at me, like she's forgotten how she got up there and how to get down, or what she came into the room to do or something...
- this morning, she ate like three bites and then scurried quickly into the closet; when I brought the food to her in the closet, she ate more; I've also been bringing water to her in the closet, and she drinks it, but I haven't seen her drink from their regular (fresh) water in ages
- she's scratched a number of bare spots out of her fur, down to the skin, leaving bloody furrows
She's also still very skinny, but does eat, seems bright-eyed, and purrs when I pet her.
Is she losing her mind? Allergies? Dementia? High blood pressure? Brain damage? Scared of Aristotle? (I've wondered if he scratched the bare spots in her fur, but the first large one happened during the night and I heard no altercations--and she screams bloody murder if he goes after her at all.)
Any of your thoughts and intelligence brought to bear are appreciated.
