There were only two stains and four laminates to choose from. I chose the slightly darker, cherry stain for the cabinets and a silvery laminate with a bit of texture, like scratched/scored metal, for the counters. My appliances are supposedly going to be black, so that should all look good together, methinks. Me hopes.
The store where we went for me to make the choices is called Four Hands, and they do a lot of wholesale furniture, but also some retail. Lots of gorgeous stuff; heavy woods, carving, antique things from Southern India, like bookshelves made from antique carved doorways, window arches, deep caved couches with hidden cabinets. Two giant carved wooden horses. Nothing I could afford, but Nadia got two dining room chairs (a start on replacing the set they're giving me when I move) of rosewood with leather seat cushions, both with arms for the two ends of the table. Very handsome.
Then we went by the building site. The whole frame is up for my building! Very very cool.
