--not counting Blue Crush which I watched on DVD last night. Cause, really, it doesn't count as a movie so much, more a day at the beach.
Earlier yesterday I saw Garden State and today I saw (finally) The Village. The following brief reviews are pretty much spoiler free I think, but just in case, they are behind this here cut.
Garden State is sweet, often funny, and very much an indie movie, except for the end and one or two scenes that are just too Hollywood.
The Village, I think, is a damn cool movie. Combination fairy tale--in the Sister Grimmer tradition--allegorical tale, and plain old good story, it's deeply philosophical--at least relative to most every other movie being made these days. As with all his movies, it's very much an artifact unto itself, but it's resonant and interesting, thoughtful and compelling. Yeah, there's quite a few things that don't stand up to close scrutiny--but it's a fairy tale, and the one unbelievable thing it asks its audience to believe has nothing to do with the story's main monster.
Brownies in the oven and the rest of Sunday before me. Sweet.
